The newest breed to join the herding group is the Icelandic Sheepdog. Two other new breeds have joined the working group: Cane Corso and the Leonberger. If you wish to learn more about these breeds you can contact: www.icelanddogs.com, www.canecorso.org and www.leonbergerclubofamerica.com

Switching to another topic I want to mention Megaesophagus in dogs. It is a condition in which the esophagus has become constricted, thus preventing the normal flow of food, liquids and bodily fluids which pass through the mouth and down the pathway to the stomach. Often when it occurs in newborn puppies, they cannot nurse without spitting up and milk coming out their nose. The condition is considered to be hereditary in some breeds. It may be mild with symptoms as small as a cough or regurgitation of small bits of food. Or, it may cause the animal to be unable to eat at all due to dilation of the entire esophagus or restriction of the esophagus.
X-rays are the most accurate way to tell. Aspiration pneumonia is a common complication of this condition...food can get caught in the lungs.
If your dog has megaesophagus and can eat, it is best to serve them soft food in small portions. Elevating the food and water bowl helps also.

If you happen to live in or around Ventura County California or think you might want to move here please check out Ventura homes for sale at my website:

www.Venturahomesforsale.org

Adopt a Greyhound!!

Greyhounds are very laid back and loyal animals. Seven dog tracks halted racing across the country last year. Hundreds of greyhounds have an uncertain future. ADOPT
A GREYHOUND!! Check out the website: http://www.adopt-a-greyhound.org/ The aim of this organization is to connect available dogs to owners as well as people willing to transport animals from kennels in one state to new homes in another.
Give a greyhound the love they deserve and they will give the love back tenfold!!
The number of tracks offering races has steadily decreased in the past decade. Please contact your state Assemblymember and Senator immediately and ask him/her to oppose SB 250.

The bill will force sterilization of an unlicensed, intact animal if it is impounded (even once!) or violates any one of a variety of animal control ordinances that are not related to an animal's reproductive status. This legislation will not improve the lives of cats and dogs, will negatively impact responsible owners and breeders, and by placing additional burdens on owners of intact animals, may lead to an increase of animals in shelters.

The bill will prohibit an owner who has had an intact dog license revoked from owning any intact dog, so if you have one problem animal you would be banned from ever owning an intact dog again! This is completely unreasonable.

The AKC encourages owners who do not want to engage in responsible breeding programs or compete with their dogs to spay and neuter their animals. We object to forced sterilization of dogs for minor animal control violations. With the confusion of overlapping jurisdictions and a high number of people being forced to move due to foreclosures, it is easy to see how an owner could overlook pet licensure. Instead of encouraging these people to come into compliance, SB 250 penalizes them by requiring sterilization, even for a single offense. By requiring an expensive elective surgery in addition to fines to reclaim their animal, some owners will be forced to make the heart-wrenching decision to abandon a family pet.

Existing state law already requires that owners of intact animals pay a license fee that is at least double that of the fee for sterilized animals and provides for enhanced and graduated fines for owners whose intact dogs are impounded. These statutes are sufficient to incentivize owners to sterilize their animals and to address animal control concerns with specific intact animals who are impounded. If local governments feel the need to adopt further ordinances, it is within their power to do so.

This bill is currently on the Assembly floor and will likely be voted on in the next few days. If it passes the Assembly it will return to the Senate to enable the Senators to vote for or against the changes made in the Assembly. Please contact both your Assemblymember and Senator immediately! Passage of SB 250 will make it much harder to obtain a locally raised purebred dog in California!

What You Can Do

Contact your Assemblymember and Senator and ask him/her to oppose SB 250. It is such a depressing time when we are going through this. Well I discovered a place where you can have a tree planted in honor of your pet. It's the Arbor Day Foundation Trees for Pets. It enables you to honor a special companion in your life with a gift of a tree. You can do it for your own pet or do it for someone elses pet. What a nice way to honor our 4 legged friends and feel like their memories live on year after year! Check out: http://www.arborday.org/treesforpets

Also something that was exciting to me was discovering http://www.adoptapet.com I put in my zip code and all kinds of pictures for nice pets in my area appeared. So if you have just settled into that new house and are looking to make it a home for a new pet too, check out this website and enjoy! Find local pets via the web.

If you happen to be looking for a home in Ventura County California or if I can help you with any of your Ventura Real Estate needs just tap into my website at:

VenturaRealEstate

Libby Tries Out Herding Sheep

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 221px; height: 223px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zdCq6gcrbPc/SfVT3WBa_FI/AAAAAAAAAIk/LfC4_tZuqtw/s320/Libby_catching_on%5B1%5D.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5329257944332303442" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 159px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zdCq6gcrbPc/SfVSfLQ-kNI/AAAAAAAAAIc/e4yZHKgFxo8/s320/Libby+hearding+sheep.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5329256429616271570" /></

Libby tried out herding last weekend and really loved it! You should take your dog out and try it. Ted Thompson Ondrak is the instructor and he holds training in the Moorpark area of Ventura County on Monday afternoons. You can contact him at http://www.socalherding.com Ted is a licensed herding judge for the American Kennel Club. He is a founding member of the Antelope Valley Stockdog Club, the Greater Los Angeles Stockdog Club and the co-founder of the San Fernando Valley Herding Association.
If you are looking for something new and exciting to do with your dogs, this is it! For the past 15 years Ted has been teaching and giving herding clinics.

By the way as a side note, Ventura Real Estate and Ventura Homes For Sale have really picked up in the last month. We are seeing multiple offers and overbidding on homes in the $250,000-450,000 range. The Market is hot again right now. Many feel it is a great time to jump back into the housing market. Ventura County has always been a favorite place for a home due to its mild climate and ocean breezes.
Check out the current housing market on my website at:

www.JanisCalkins.com or www.Venturahomesforsale.org

Save The Greyhounds!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 120px; height: 128px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zdCq6gcrbPc/SbFfZd_tdoI/AAAAAAAAAIU/w1jF38TMIfs/s320/ts%5B1%5D.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5310130326799742594" />
I picked up the local paper this morning and was touched by an article on abandoned greyhounds that are in Guam. How ironic that this just arrived after having been up to Solvang recently and running into an annual "greyhound festival" that is held there each year. Owners were strolling all over the town enjoying their greyhounds. They appear to be very mellow and enjoyable pets.

This mornings article is entitled"Group Races to Save Greyhounds".
Greyhounds from Guam need to be rescued as soon as possible! 150 former racing greyhounds were abandoned in the U.S. territory in the South Pacific and need homes. They were abandoned after the racetrack there abruptly closed its doors in November.
After hearing this news, Homestretch Greyhound Rescue, a nonprofit organization located in Fillmore, California and operated by Barbara Davenport, starting having greyhounds shipped to her place. She and her husband, Bob, have received 54 greyhounds from Guam. They are seeking financial assistance in order to bring more greyhounds over to the states, as well as homes for these greyhounds. What they really need in addition to financial donations (needed to pay for flying the dogs over), are boarding kennels that could provide short term accomodations at little or no cost. Greyhounds make wonderful pets. They are not wild and energetic, but love to lay around and just be a companion.

If you are interested in adopting or providing aid please go to http://www.guamgreyhounds.org or call 800-446-8637. Also, contact Barbara at http://www.homestretchgrey.org

Please keep me in mind if looking to buy or sell real estate in Ventura County!

For all you Ventura County Real Estate Needs visit: http://www.JanisCalkins.com

Tough Times...Time To Relish Little Pleasures

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 211px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zdCq6gcrbPc/SaRm9WqtsAI/AAAAAAAAAIM/nFbs4797dOw/s320/stump%5B1%5D.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306479465192075266" />
Okay, I'm feeling soapy today so get ready. Lately, I have been into enjoying more of the small pleasures in my life. Being a real estate agent in this economy can drive you sort of crazy if you let it. Yes, I believe it is a great time to jump into the market, so contact me if you agree!
Now...let's talk about the winner of Westminster this year. Every year for about 12 years I attended Westminster with first both of my parents and later years just my mom...The last year of my mom's life she said to me in January, "I know I am supposed to go somewhere important next month, I just can't remember where.". Yes, this is sad but it shows her enthusiasm for wanting to attend that dog show. And YES she went with me. It was her last one she attended but it was soooo special for us to go together. Born and raised with a boarding kennel and show dogs and the show circuit, I realized that this is what she lived for.
This year I wish she could have seen the Sussex Spaniel win...He almost died a number of years ago, but he lived through it and you could tell...the Westminster was also his last shining moment!! How wonderful. "Stump" or Ch. Clussexx Three D Grinchy Glee (okay you have to be fun to come up with this name!) represents one of the oldest breeds recognized by the AKC. Long, low, large bone, massive head with a rolling gait and happy tail is the Sussex. He was so enjoying the moment!! He shouted, "Look at me!" "Pick me!" That's what I want to do when I am trying to get clients in this business. I want to say, "I'm the one!" "I know the market!" "Call me for all your Ventura County Real Estate Needs!"...sorry, I digress. I have real estate on the brain too. Sadly, the Sussex has dwindled to no more than 600 in the USA. Check out the website if you decide you want to buy a puppy instead of a home.
It is: http://www.sussexspaniels.org

Or if you decide to buy that house instead (smart move by the way!) check out real estate in Ventura County California or Ventura County Homes For Sale at:

http://www.Venturahomesforsale.org

The Boys Have Become Teenagers...Watch Out!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zdCq6gcrbPc/SYdAEgS0xfI/AAAAAAAAAH0/mQMgS4cojuo/s320/CIMG0742.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5298273932757222898" />
These two have given me so much pleasure! BUT they are constantly into digging the yard and picking up wood from the woodpile and running in and out of the bushes. They LOVE one anothers company and roll and play and pull at each other. Oh what a life! I do need to sell one of them. I am looking to sell him to someone who wants to show him at the dog shows. They are both show quality animals and I do want to promote my breeding.

On a side note, Ventura County Real Estate sales are picking up! Now is the time to jump into the market and invest in property in my opinion. Interest rates are low and values have dropped due to the many foreclosures in this area. They call this dog "handsome and rugged" and say it is considered by experts to be the original setter from which all others sprang. They make a high spirited companion for outdoorsy people who wish to share their active lifestyles with a dog.
Next is the Pyrenean Shepherd. This breed herded sheep in Southern France. It is a superb athlete and would do well in today's agility sport.
A bit distrustful by nature, this dog does need early socialization. Lean and lively with a sparkling personality.
Last is the Norwegian Buhund. This dog was bred to hunt, guard, and herd. A little under Medium size with its tail curled over its back, this dog is very intelligent but has lots of energy, strength, and stamina. Consistent training is needed from puppyhood.

Check out Ventura County Real Estate and Ventura County Homes for Sale at:

www.Venturahomesforsale.org

No Animal Left Behind! This law requires a person or private entity that discovers an abandoned animal in or about the premises of real property that has been vacated upon, or immediately preceding, the termination of a lease or other rental agreement or foreclosure of the property to immediately contact animal control for the purpose of retrieval and care.

This law impacts banks with REO properties and their real estate agents.

This is a terrific law to protect those animals left behind at vacant properties by the occupants. If you see a stray animal lurking around a vacant property and there is a real estate sign on the property with a listing agents name, please call the listing agent and have them take responsibility as is accorded under this new law in California. These poor animals should not be left to fend for themselves with no home, no food, no water, no shelter.

*** Stay tuned for my next post which will talk about 3 new breeds just approved by the AKC!

**** The pup in the picture above is for sale to show home only!! The German Shepherd and the Doberman Pinscher. The GSD's ability to sniff for explosives is because of his keen sense of smell. This strong, alert and intelligent breed is the third most popular breed in the United States today.

If you are thinking of purchasing a home and want a great companion and protector consider purchasing a German Shepherd. As a home companion they are calm, steady alert and protective and form an unbelievable love of family. They are totally devoted to loving and protecting the family. They have an uncanny ability to distinguish between good people and bad people and seem to always be able to sense danger. They have a look of quality and nobility. This dog faithfully keeps America from harm.

Please check out my real estate website at: http://www.Venturahomesforsale.org

Feeding Dogs From The Table and Tablescraps

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zdCq6gcrbPc/STGs0H0w8xI/AAAAAAAAAG0/UBr0K7E7JEU/s320/Libby+pups+December+2008+018.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5274186650081096466" />
Feeding your puppies or even grown dogs from the table can be tempting. They look at you with those pleading eyes and say, "Just a tidbit please". This, however, can lead to your dog always hanging at the table while you eat your meal. It is better to train your dog to wait until after the meal and then to give them the food in their bowl after the meal is over. This way you can still share, but they will not be staring at your guests at the table when you have company over for a meal.
Also, be VERY careful never to give your dog turkey bones or any small slivery bones.
They are very dangerous to your dog. They can get caught in their throat or stomach.
Too much rich food is never good for your dog either. A few turkey meat scraps and potato would be just fine and your dog will think he/she is in heaven.

On a different subject, NOW is a great time to purchase a home. If you have been thinking of jumping into the Ventura Real Estate market I cannot think of a better time than now. Ventura County foreclosures are up, interest rates are low, and those sellers/banks need to sell those properties. Our animals are like our children and making sure that you hire an agent with a compassion for your animals and one that will provide care and reassurance to their well being while your home is being shown is critical. We certainly do not want to lose or harm our "children" just in order to get our home sold. Providing that care and nurturing attention to your animals is what I feel is important. Making signs to keep the door shut, or making sure the dog is left in a safe place and that they are still in their favorite place after a showing of your home is what I pride myself on.
If you are thinking of selling in the near future and have precious animals that you love dearly, consider using me as your agent. I know I have always prided myself on being trustworthy and forthright as a real estate agent. Yes, I have lost some deals by being too honest and too caring and too willing to point out every little thing I see that might be a concern on a property. But "YES!" I feel so good about being the way I am. Ventura County is a lovely place to live. Ventura County homes for sale is what I am all about. Believing that real estate is definitely a good investment in the long term will never change for me. So, I come home and I greet my dogs, love my current German Shepherd puppies and bask in their unconditional love. They love me, they trust me, they believe in me and they will stick with me through thick and thin in the real estate market. Perhaps there should be a hotline for homeowners facing foreclosure to call. People are in depression and agony over their homes and at the same time are losing their beloved pets. Many rentals will not accept animals and they are costly to keep. Shelters have been inundated where foreclosure rates are high-from Florida to Michigan, Minnesota, Colorado, Arizona and California. In May, the number of animals turned into Los Angeles City shelters jumped 30 percent. Pets seem to be the silent victims of this whole economic downturn. The harsh reality is, as more animals come into the shelters, the more that have to be put down. If you are ready for a new pet, please take the time to visit a shelter and give one of these older, loved pets a new home.
Let's not forget these silent victims!

Please visit www.JanisCalkins.com

Canine Melanoma

According to a recent article in the AKC Gazette by Betty Liddick, research is being done to help stop melanoma in dogs. There is work being done to produce the first cancer vaccine. It is in the beginning stages and there is high hope for it. Signs of Melanoma occur most commonly in the mouth. Affected dogs may lose weight, sneeze and develop bleeding, bad breath and face swelling. Round, dark melanomas can also develop in footpads, nail beds, lips and eyes. All dogs are susceptible but breeds with a lot of dark pigment seem particularly vulnerable.. These would Black Labs, Chows, Doberman Pinschers Flat Coated Retrievers, German Shepherds, Goldens, Setters,
Rottweilers. Scotty's, Standard Poodles and Vizslas.
The first clinic to investigate a melanoma vaccine is Katonah-Bedford Veterinary Center in New York.According to the article two more veterinary schools are investigating melanoma vaccines as well. The Univ. of Wisconsin and the Univ. of Florida.
So, if our dogs develop melanoma....first we should know how to recognize it and second where to go to investigate the possibility of help!

Search Ventura County Real Estate at:
www.JanisCalkins.com

Two Topics this Time: Cushing Disease and Smelly Homes!

Just a reminder to animal lovers that plan on selling their homes. When you have dogs, it is very easy to become accustomed to their doggy smell within the home. However, from personal experience in showing homes of animal lovers, I can tell you that there is often a leftover odor from Fido, even when FIDO is not present. Please bathe your dogs and wash their bedding often. Also, remember to shampoo anything used by your dogs and to clean the carpet before putting your home on the market. "Doggy Smell" can definitely turn buyers off.

Know the Signs of Cushing's Disease!
This glandular disorder strikes many older dogs, but owners may not recognize the symptoms until the disease has reached an advanced stage. This is a serious canine disorder that can cause death in dogs. According to Dr.Jeff Grognet, DVM, after a dog consumes a fatty meal, it is natural for the fat level in the blood to rise. Normally it quickly falls again. But in hyperlipidemia the high level is sustained. If a dog still has lipid in his blood 12 hours after his last meal, his body is either producing too much lipid or there is ineffective clearance of lipid by the liver, and the dog has hyperlipidemia.
Prolonged hyperlipidemia creates symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea as well as abdominal pain and distension. The dog goes off food, may have seizures, and fat deposits in the eye can cause vision loss. To diagnose have blood tests done and they will show persistently elevated levels of cholesterol and triglyceride.

To Search for Real Estate For Sale in Ventura County
Check Out Ventura County Homes For Sale At: www.Janis Calkins.com

Pet Preferences

The AKC looked at the top 10 breeds in the nation's largest cities. Some interesting facts:
The Bulldog is most popular in Los Angeles, where it is ranked 2nd right after the Labrador
Detroit, Knoxville, Miami, Honolulu and Orlando are the only cities that do not have the Labrador in the top spot. Detroit and Miami favor the German Shepherd, while Orlando puts the Yorkshire Terrier in first place; Honolulu the Golden Retriever, and Knoxville the Boxer
Salt Lake City is the only city to place the Shih Tzu in a top spot.
Oklahoma City places the Miniature Schnauzer in top spot.
San Francisco and Los Angeles were the only cities to include the French Bulldog in their top 10 list.

Don't forget the big Westminster Dog Show is coming up this Monday and Tuesday February 11 and 12. Watch for it on television! Westminster was the only dog show in America in 2007 to have entries in every recognized breed and variety. See it on USA Network. Four newly recognized breeds will make their debut this year.
The Plott, the Tibetan Mastiff, the Beauceron and the Swedish Vallhund. He was on a road leading to Heaven.
He came to a beautiful large home that had written across the front "This is Heaven."
He approached the gate, only to be stopped by a guard. As he tried to enter the guard stopped him and said,
"No dogs are allowed in here."
So the old man turned and left.
Soon, he came to another large house. The sign said, " HEAVEN."
The old man and Teddy, his dog, walked up to the guard at the the gate.
"I want to come in, but I want my dog, Teddy, to be welcome too."
The guard smiled. "Dogs are always welcome in HEAVEN."
The old man looked confused. "I don't understand. Your place is marked "HEAVEN". So what was the other
home down the road marked "This is Heaven?"
The guard frowned. See your veterinarian regularly
2. Ask your vet about appropriate diet for your dog
3. Keep a record of the dates seizures occur and how long they last
4. Never change or discontinue medications without consulting your vet
5. Discuss family activities that include your dog with your vet. For example, if you engage in
water sports you might be asked to consider using a canine life vest to avoid the drowning of
your dog during a seizure.
6. Each year, thousands of pets become seriously injured or ill during the holiday season. Pets can become very ill from items such as table butter, meat and candy. These foods can result in gastrointestinal upsets and pancreatitis, a painful and sometimes fatal condition. Symptoms include depression, vomiting, abdominal pain or lack of appetite. During the Thanksgiving holiday prevention is the key.
Place high risk foods out of reach. Don't feed your dog lots of table scraps full of high fat content.
Do not let them chew on the turkey bones.
In the hustle and bustle of the day, remember your pet's regular feeding and exercise schedule and be certain to give them lots of love!!

Check out Ventura County Homes For Sale at:

http://www.JanisCalkins.com

A few Quotes To Ponder For Fun!

Dogs are the most amazing creatures;they give UNCONDITIONAL LOVE. Well, we discovered K9 Grass! They say this is the ideal grass for kennels, pet resorts, vet clinics, and of course, pet owners.
It has knitted backing with flow-through technology that drains instantly and endures years of chewing and digging. It is installed in the City of San Jose, California in their 14,000 sq. ft. dog park. It is the only artifical grass specifically designed for dogs! Wow! It is not to be confused with hip dysplasia. It affects primarily German Shepherd Dogs, but is also seen in Boxers, Welsh Corgis, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Irish Setters, and Old English Sheepdogs and is often considered the canine equivalent of human amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease) or multiple sclerosis.
For those dogs diagnosed with DM, the AKC Canine Health Foundation, in cooperation with Scout's House in Menlo Park, California has made available a free instructional video on caring for affected dogs. The video shows how owners can modify their homes to make it easier to live with a DM Dog, recommends products for more comfortable and functional lives and explains how physical therapy may help slow the disease.
For more information, see the CHF web site at:
www.akcchf.org/news/index.cfm?article_id=194.

Much has been written about the loyalty of dogs, but what I love about them isn't their devotion to me so much as their devotion to being alive. --Steven Bauer

Check out Ventura County Real Estate at:
http://www.JanisCalkins.com

Who Will Care For Our Pets That Outlive Us?

The dog of your boyhood teaches you a great deal about friendship, and love, and death: Old Skip was my brother. -Willie Morris

When the so-called 'Queen of Mean' Leona Helmsley recently passed away, she bequeathed to the care of her beloved Maltese "Trouble" some $12 million. This case may be extreme, but many of us will be faced with this dilemma some day. Who will care for the pets that outlive us? Pet Trusts are an increasingly popular strategy and it doesn't take millions of dollars. An estate planning attorney can help pet owners set up a statutory pet trust for as little as $100, in addition to the cost of a will. California started allowing these in 1991. Most pet trusts name a caretaker and a trustee to handle the money. Within the trust the owner can specify what food to feed, outline vet visits and even where to bury the pet. After the pet dies, the owner can specify what to do with leftover funds (such as designate a charity). Leaving the care of a pet up to a family member or friend that may not be willing or able to live up to the task is a risk that most pet owner don't want to take.T

Search Ventura County Real Estate at http://www.Janis Calkins.com

Experimental Treatment for Blindness in Dogs

Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine has been experimenting with a treatment which may reverse sudden acquired retinal degeneration syndrome (SARDS). Dogs with a sudden loss of sight, which is thought to be caused by auto-immune disease, were given intravenous immunoglobulin. This drug is used against immune-mediated retinopathy in humans. However, animals with severe cardiac or kidney disease could not be given this medication. Nor would it work on advanced retinal degeneration. Researchers at Iowa State say that SARDS affects up to 4,000 dogs a year! She is a boxer that was rescued. She had been beaten and had damaged eardrums and was deaf when the owners took her into their home to love. The owners had another dog of the same breed that they acquired to be Tillie's ears so that she could follow this dogs actions and become more comfortable with her new surroundings. This was an excellent idea. Mentoring and companionship are both important for a dog too!
This also made me think about people making a move to a new home with a disabled pet. A pet with loss of hearing, loss of sight, old age, etc. must be given special attention to make sure they remain feeling secure when moved. Make sure to keep their old dog bed, toys, blankets, favorite treats, favorite foods etc. Consistency from the old surroundings to the new is really important. Take it slow and make sure that your pet gets as much attention as possible during and after the move. You might consider having a microchip implanted if you think there is any chance your pet might panic in the new location and try to escape or run away.....and you might even think of acquiring another dog to help them acclimate to the new surroundings. It sure helped Tillie out!

Check out Ventura County Real Estate at:
http://www.janiscalkins.com/

The Vet

Check out a site on the Internet called NetVet and the Electronic Zoo. Standing 11.5-13.5 inches tall, with a height to length ratio of 2:3 (longer legs and shorter bodies than the Corgi breed) these are "big dogs in small packages". They love agility, obedience, rally, tracking, search and rescue, flyball, and herding and are wonderful family pets. After all, moving in and of itself is a big project. One of the best things to think about before making the move is where you are going to put the dog when you arrive at your new home. Is there a fenced yard? Is the fence secure enough that your dog will not panic and climb over or dig under? Have you done a perimeter check of the fence before releasing the dog to the new location. You might want to consider setting up a smaller enclosure within the larger yard for the first few weeks and spending those first few hours/days in the yard with the dog to get them used to the new setting. Take familiar toys, blankets, bedding with you. Monitor your dogs barking the first few weeks until he/she feels comfortable. Chances are they might be a bit noisier than usual. After all, your attention will be diverted elsewhere. So, make sure they are kept secure and happy!

www.JanisCalkins.com
